DAY TWENTY-THREE PHOTOS

This was a sign at the Visitors center in Fredericksburg.  Behind the sign and up the hill about 50 ft, was the stone wall mentioned.  A bit further up the hill is the cemetery where many of the about 20,000 of the 100,000 dead were buried.

Sign posted near the entrance to the cemetery.  The sign quotes Col E. P. Alexander's statement to Commander James Longstreet regarding the bombardment of the open field, that it was raked "as with a fine tooth comb" and that "A chicken could not live on that field".
